White Center Heights Elementary Wins CEFPI Award
The Washington Chapter of the Council of Educational Facility Planners (CEFPI) presented a Merit Award to White Center Heights Elementary, at its 2007 conference. The new school, in the Highline School District, serves the White Center neighborhood of King County. Its students represent the area's diverse population, incuding recent immigrants, English language learners, and King County Housing Authority's new Greenbridge neighborhood. These stakeholder groups were included in the design process, and the new school reflects their priorities. It makes a bold architectural statement appropriate to the importance the community places on education. It features safe, welcoming, comfortable spaces for learning. The design of the facility supports the school's goal of fostering parent and community involvement, with a clearly defined public entry, an easy-to-navigate floor plan, and spaces available for community use.

The National School Boards Association awarded Purdy Elementary a Jury Citation during the 2006 NSBA Exhibition of School Architecture in Chicago, April 8-10. The citation reads: "The jury was impressed with the simple yet innovative transformation of this open plan school. This project facilitated the creation of defined classrooms, corridor alcoves for one-on-one instruction, and centralized restrooms. Through the use of economical building materials, a once stark exterior entrance was given a welcoming appearance. A thoughtful phasing plan allowed this project to be executed without disruption to the learning process."
